
He’s a complicated man. Easy to paint as the “bad guy” of the early days of the Shinsengumi, but a good adaptation doesn’t make it so black and white, but as a contrast to Kondou and his goals and asperations. I think Hakuouki did alright, but the best Serizawa remains Koichi Sato in NHK’s 2004 tiaga drama Shinsengumi!
The second best is, of course, the weird comic Kizu and I translated back in the day where he was an actual duck that the Shinsengumi dressed up, with the joke being that “Kamo” can be read as “duck”.
