A few days later…
It’s the afternoon and Makoto and I just got back from school. She’s running around -again-. Her and Yoshi are the same like that. I lean by the big tree and watch her. The sun will set soon and i like watching the sun set.
I take out the tenmari ball from my pocket. I’ve not forgotten about it but I wasn’t sure if I should return it to her.

Hey Makoto-chan.” I call her over. “I found your ball
I hop up and down, “Oh, thank you, thank you onisan!” I take the ball and hug it to myself. “I was wanting to find it by the time chichiue comes home so he thinks that I’m not being careless.” He made it himself so it’s very special.
Then I decide to tell him my idea. “Look, Tsutomu-kun, the builders have extra wood. Do you think we could build a base there?” I point at the big tree he’s leaning on. It has good branches. “We had a story in our English class about a,” I slow down to say it in English, “Tree-House”. Then we could see everything like a bird!
She hops up and down. She seems genuinely happy. I don’t make a comment about what -he- would think. “Don’t worry he won’t be coming home anytime soon.” I tell her, because he wouldn’t.
“Look, Tsutomu-kun, the builders have extra wood. Do you think we could build a base there?”
I circle the tree. It’s big and likely been here a while. It’s tall though and I look at Makoto. She’s still much too short. “I don’t know Makoto. The tree is big, with good branches but it’s a little too high for you. And it will take time to build a treehouse. And money of course.” Then i remember, I do have some money. But still i think maybe somewhere closer to the ground would be safe for her. Those pile of woods wouldn’t be able to make a sturdy treehouse.

Oh… I look down. I try to think about it how hahue told me to. He has a job to do. Sometimes I think of the night we had to go from Ito, it was scary and sometimes I have bad dreams – “I guess there’s a lot of bad guys for him to catch, but don’t worry, he’s very good at it.” I pat him on the arm. I think we all get to worry, sometimes.
I don’t know Makoto. The tree is big, with good branches but it’s a little too high for you. And it will take time to build a treehouse. And money of course.
“Really really?” I run around the tree.
“But we could make a -” I stop and try to get out the next English word, stumbling on it a bit – “ladder”. I switch back to Japanese (which is much easier, but I already know it) and say “I want to see the sky up close.”
I add, “I can be a good helper.” I grin up at him.
“I guess there’s a lot of bad guys for him to catch, but don’t worry, he’s very good at it.”
“How do you know that?” I shrug. If he was good at it, he wouldn’t be spending so much time catching them, I think. But I don’t tell her this and move on to circling the tree with her.
“But we could make a -” I stop and try to get out the next English word, stumbling on it a bit – “ladder”.
“Ladder.” I cup my chin, that’s not too bad. “But i don’t want us to make it.” I think I can go ask Kinosuke-san to ask one of the builders. “It has to be done -right-.” I don’t mind if I use my money on that. I’d like looking up too.
““I can be a good helper.”
“Well you can help in decorating the place. After it’s built.” Wait did I just say “yes”? I have lots of other things to do right? I must be bored…
How do you know that?
He just shrugs. Maybe he’s not seen it?
But this treehouse!
He likes my ladder idea, and says the word -right-.
I find a stick and start drawing in the dirt. A big tree, and I draw a line for the floor. “This can be where we sit and have snacks.” I smile at him.
It has to be done -right-
He understands, he really does. He says I can “decorate” which sounds like fun. “Just make sure it’s hidden behind the tree branches, because it’s a -secret- base,” I tell my brother. “But oh, we have to be able to see the stars too.”
She starts to draw and i just look and nod. I’m not really sure if I’ll be spending much time in this secret base of hers. I kind of like being left alone.
“Just make sure it’s hidden behind the tree branches, because it’s a -secret- base,”
“Yes yes. It’s a secret.” I don’t really believe her. I’m sure she’ll tell -her- but it doesn’t matter.
“But oh, we have to be able to see the stars too.”
“In our class you can get a “telescope”. You can see the stars with that.” I start walking away, even with a telescope I doubt I’ll see that sparkle.
(OOC: Tsutomu will exit unless something happens)
He suddenly gets all grumpy. I think that’s just how boys are. No, well, Kenji at school is usually just being sorta silly. Maybe it’s just big boys, like my brother.
I shrug, and go back to drawing. I add a person for me, and him. Standing back I smile. Perfect!
Then I go back to playing my counting and jumping game on the steps.
