Every year since 1963, the Japanese broadcaster NHK has produced an historical drama, called a Taiga Drama, set during key events in Japan's past. In 2004, the subject of the 43rd drama was the Shinsengumi! 49 episodes aired every Sunday night for a year. Written by noted playwright and director Koki Mitani, it starred many famous actors and actresses, most notably Katori Shingo, best known as a member of the pop idol group SMAP. Covering the time from Kondou Isami’s early days in Tama until the group’s end, the long format allowed time for lesser-known stories to be told and even minor members of the group to have their moments. Action, drama, romance, humor - so many human aspects of the Shinsengumi and others of their time are explored. A special was made the next year focusing on Hijikata’s story after Kondou’s death. Please check back, as we will be adding summaries, screen captures, cast information and other fun features!
